Build A Safety Program With VSM

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act) was the response to the excessive number of fatalities and injuries occurring in American workplaces. Its enactment was intended to support safer and healthier work environments.

OSHA’s role is to assure the safety and health of America’s workers by setting and enforcing standards that require employers to:

    • Maintain conditions or adopt practices reasonably necessary and appropriate to protect workers on the job
    • Be familiar with and comply with standards applicable to their establishments
    • Ensure that employees have and use personal protective equipment when required for safety and health

In addition, where specific OSHA standards do not exist, employers must comply with the OSH Act’s General Duty Clause .

Work environments must be evaluated so potentially hazardous conditions, materials, or practices are identified and appropriate controls are developed. VSM is the perfect tool to help employers accomplish these safety goals in an efficient, cost-effective manner.

The process begins with a Hazard Survey (found in the Tools section of VSM). The survey includes questions that identify the most common hazards existing in the most common work places. (The questions in the image below are sample questions: additional questions relate to additional potential hazards.)

If the question applies, a check is placed in the box to the left of the question. Doing so automatically selects the program represented by that question for the Safety Policies and Procedures Manual.

After saving the Hazard Survey selections in VSM, a Safety Policies and Procedures Manual is automatically created based on the responses.

Based on the Hazard Survey example above, the Safety Policies and Procedures Manual would include programs with a green check in the Recommended column, as shown below. Through VSM, each program is then edited to be site-specific.

The result written documents that are:

    • Based on the hazards present in a given workplace
    • Site-specific, as required by OSHA
