    The Employee Safety Handbook

OSHA regulations require that employers develop written programs stating the policies and procedures that provide employees protection against specific hazards. These are often long, legal sounding documents and are rarely read by employees. The Employee Safety Handbook (ESH) is an abbreviated version of company safety policies and procedures, covering the essential details employees need to perform their duties in a safe and healthy manner and in a readable format. It can be created using the Virtual Safety Manager. The ESH is created by first choosing the elements or subjects to be included. On the Tools page of VSM, scroll down to the Employee Information and Safety Handbook section to view all the subjects that can be included in the ESH, as shown below.

Clicking on the “Edit” icon to the left of each element will open it so it can be edited. After all subjects have been edited, the contents of the ESH can be selected. Return to the “Tools” menu, scroll down to the “Employee Safety Handbook” and click on it. The following page appears:

    Select ESH Elements

Select the elements to include by clicking the check box to the left of each title. That subject will be included in the ESH. After all the selections have been made, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the “Preview” button. The completed booklet can be reviewed and/or printed in a half page or full page pdf file or HTML document. The Employee Safety Handbook contains the essential information to equip employees to work in a safe and healthy manner. It can be site-specific and printed in a convenient format for distribution to all employees. It is particularly valuable when included in an orientation packet for all new hires.
